Inclusion

Welcome to the Moorlands Inclusion Team,  we are deeply committed to ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their individual starting points, can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. We work in strict alignment with the SEND Code of Practice and Southampton’s Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) to ensure that high-quality, inclusive teaching is the bedrock of our classrooms.

Because we recognise that some pupils require additional, bespoke support, we have invested in a large, highly qualified multidisciplinary Inclusion Team.

Meet the Team

To ensure every pupil receives the right support at the right time, our staff are organised into specialist areas:

Inclusion Leadership & Strategy

  • Miss Roughton (Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion & Designated Safeguarding Lead): Oversees the strategic direction of SEND and Safeguarding across the school, ensuring legal compliance and managing complex statutory assessments (such as EHCPs).

  • Mr Reed (Pupil Premium Lead & Assistant Headteacher for Teaching and Learning): Ensures that our curriculum is accessible to all and that pupils eligible for Pupil Premium funding receive targeted, effective academic support.

SEND Coordination (Phase Specific)

  • Miss Cummerson (Acorn Building SENCo): Coordinates SEND provision and interventions for pupils in Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3.

  • Miss Buckfield (Oak Building SENCo): Coordinates SEND provision and interventions for pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6, with a strong focus on preparing pupils for the transition to secondary school.

Pastoral, Emotional, and Behavioural Support

  • Miss Deadman Rose (ELSA, Behaviour Support, and Thrive Practitioner): Delivers targeted social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) interventions, using the Thrive approach to support emotional regulation.

  • Mrs Nash & Miss Cummerson (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants - ELSAs): Provide bespoke, short-term emotional and social support to pupils experiencing temporary or long-term challenges.

Specialist Interventions & Clinical Support

  • Mrs Blyth & Mrs Baker (Speech and Language Support): Deliver tailored programmes to pupils with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN), ensuring they can access learning and express themselves confidently.

  • Dr Hagerty (Educational Psychologist): Provides highly specialised clinical assessments, consultations, and strategic advice for pupils with the most complex learning or developmental profiles.

Our Specialist Provisions

(Opening September 2026 - subject to the outcome of a public consultation)

We are proud to host two dedicated learning environments for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD):

  • The Cocoon (Resource Provision): A highly structured, nurturing environment where pupils benefit from specialist teaching while retaining access to the mainstream school community where appropriate.

  • The Sett (SEND Unit): A specialised unit providing intensive, bespoke educational programmes for pupils with specific and complex ASD/MLD needs.

(Please note: Admissions to The Cocoon and The Sett are managed in consultation with Southampton Local Authority based on strict EHCP criteria, rather than via direct school application).

How We Support Your Child: The Graduated Approach

In line with the SEND Code of Practice, we follow a cycle of Assess, Plan, Do, Review to identify and support needs.

To ensure this process is effective and that our staff can dedicate their working hours to directly supporting the pupils, we ask parents to follow a structured communication pathway. All communication must be directed via the school office, who will ensure your query reaches the correct professional promptly.

  1. Step 1: The Class Teacher. Your child’s class teacher is always your first point of contact. They hold the day-to-day picture of your child’s learning and deliver Quality First Teaching.

  2. Step 2: Phase SENCo. If, after a period of targeted support, you or the teacher feel further advice is needed, the office will pass your concerns to Miss Cummerson (Acorn Building) or Miss Buckfield (Oak Building). They may also involve our Educational Psychologist, ELSAs or Speech and Language team at this stage.

  3. Step 3: Inclusion Leadership. For the most complex cases, or those requiring multi-agency involvement and statutory assessment, Miss Roughton will be involved to oversee the provision.

By routing all queries through the school office, we can triage emergencies, keep secure records, and allow our specialists to spend their time where it matters most: in the classroom with your children.
