Year Book 21-22
Another great year has gone. It has been brilliant to be able to get back out of the classrooms again for our learning and invite people into the school. Have a look below at just a few of the highlights from the year from across the school.

Great Fire of London

Last week, Year 2 borrowed a resource box from the Hampshire Historical Society. We explored all the resources and made predictions about our new topic! We had fun looking at artefacts and some of us dressed up!

We have been learning about Christingles during our RE sessions. Hopefully the children will be able to tell you all about the different parts and what they mean.

Making Music!

Ladybirds and Butterflies joined forces to explore Neptune by Gustav Holst. (Click the planet if you would like to listen to it)

We then used ipads to create our own pieces of music.

Year 2 had so much fun exploring the ways of life of medieval knights, nobles and royalty. We made (and ate) bread, designed our own coat of arms, weaved placemats, learned how to do a medieval dance and even played medieval games!
Take a look at what we got up to below...

Medieval Challenge Day

IMG_3143.JPG

To start the day we designed our own bread. We found out that bread was eaten during medieval times but we made our breads even tastier, adding cheese, chocolate or raisins (Yum!)

After making our bread we found out all about coats of arms. We now know what they are for and found out about what different colours, animals and symbols represent. This helped us design our own!

One of our favourite parts of the day was the medieval dancing! This was so much fun especially when the music got faster and we had to keep up!

We had to concentrate really hard to weave our placemats for our banquet.
Under...over...under...over...

Food fit for a king! The bread we made for our banquet was delicious and lots of us tried every flavour. There were only crumbs left after the big bread feast!

Fishbourne Roman Palace Trip!

During our trip we were able to learn about the palace from the artefacts in the museum and complete the quiz to help us read the information carefully.
Bumblebees have begun their Roman topic by visiting Fishbourne Roman Palace.

We were all very impressed by the mosaics and enjoyed looking for animals in some of the designs.

We all had great fun and learnt so much from the Roman Life workshop. The activities we could enjoy were role playing in a Roman kitchen, spinning lamb's wool, creating our own mosaics, playing Roman games, writing our names using Roman letters, puzzles and building a bridge. We all got to dress up as Roman slaves and two of us became a king and a queen!

Bumblebees Trip to the Library!

Last Friday, Bumblebees and Dragonflies went on their first adventure to Bitterne Library! We walked all the way there and then we were incredibly lucky to explore the library. The librarian told us all about how to find the books we like and the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. We then got the chance to have a look at the books and we even got to choose one to bring back to school!

Butser Ancient  Farm Trip

Dragonflies were very lucky to visit Butser Ancient Farm and see reconstructed homes and take part in 4 workshops to help them learn more about the Anglo Saxons.

We had to be archaeologists and excavate for artefacts - we found some amazing objects!

Just like Anglo Saxon children would have done we had the chance to try spinning wool - it was very tricky and a bit smelly!

Admire our rings too!

We had a brilliant day and learnt so much! Even if we didn't like the smoky huts and sitting on the animal skins!

Ears Workshop

Dragonflies had an interesting workshop about the different parts of human ears and how they work.
We also learnt how to talk to someone who is deaf and how a cochlear implant works.

Some children used every day objects that are similar to parts of the ear to demonstrate how sound travels in the pinna (ear) and along the ear canal, to the tympanic membrane, which makes the bones in the ear move, which can be seen through the fenestra ovalis which makes waves in the cochlea.

The Tudor Banquette

The long awaited day finally arrived. We have been prepping and preparing ourselves for his majesty the one and only King Henry viii royal visit to our school for 10 weeks.

We were tasked with putting on a banquette fit for a king and by gosh I think we smashed it! We sang Tudor songs, we danced to Tudor music, we played our musical instruments and we prepared a feast to satisfy Henry's rather large appetite. What a day to remember!

RE - Exploring the Gurudwara

This morning we were so lucky that we got to bring a very special religious place right into our classroom. Miss Siduh gave us a virtual tour of the local Gurudwara in Southampton and helped us to understand the differences between a Gurudwara and a Christian Church.

We learnt that before you enter a Gurudwara you must remove your shoes and cover your head as a sign of respect. We recreated this in our classroom. It was such a fun lesson!

River Walk

What a lovely day we have had walking along the River Itchen! Year 4 represented Moorlands phenomenally during our river walk. During the walk, Woodpeckers learnt about various parts of rivers such as meanders, tributaries and the source. Everyone showed so much enthusiasm and are Itchen to start our Raging Rivers topic!

We had a great day celebrating World Book Day 2022!

Woodpeckers took a trip to Frogs Class this morning and were incredible learning role models. Each Woodpecker was paired with a member of Frog Class where they took it in turns to read to one another. It was a lovely atmosphere and we can't wait to return next week! Mr Heelas is very proud of

all the Woodpeckers for showing how caring they are :)

Everyone was suuuper cosy and excited in their pyjamas. Have a peep at the pyjamas worn today by our wonderful Woodpeckers!
